A Theory of Inferred Causation

چکیده

This paper concerns the empirical basis of causation, and addresses the following issues: 1. the clues that might prompt people to perceive causal relationships in uncontrolled observations. 2. the task of inferring causal models from these clues, and 3. whether the models inferred tell us anything useful about the causal mechanisms that underly the observations. We propose a minimal-model semantics of causation, and show that, contrary to common folklore, genuine causal innuences can be distinguished from spurious covariations following standard norms of inductive reasoning. We also establish a sound characterization of the conditions under which such a distinction is possible. We provide an effective algorithm for inferred causation and show that, for a large class of data the algorithm can uncover the direction of causal innuences as deened above. Finally, we address the issue of non-temporal causation.

Causal Analysis in Economics: Methods and Applications

In this paper we apply the method of inferred causation for macroeconomic analysis. First we introduce briefly the theory of inferred causation developed by Pearl and Verma (1991). We apply this method to the identification of structural vector autoregression (SVAR) models. In an example of monetary policy analysis we demonstrate how causal information embedded in the data can be used to identi...

Towards Sound HTTP Request Causation Inference

Network traces are a useful tool in understanding how users navigate the web. Knowing the sequence of pages that led a user to arrive at a malicious website can help researchers develop techniques to prevent users from reaching such sites. Nevertheless, inferring sound causation between HTTP requests is a challenging task. Previous work often inferred these relationships without proper calibrat...
